Special Edition - Dead Rising 2 (Outbreak Edition)
A fully loaded edition, some might say, with a little something to satiate the demands of any kind of collector. Well... almost. The Outbreak Edition was the first non-Vanilla Edition of the title announced, and was a European exclusive. Also known as the 'Tourist Edition' (for reasons that shall be explained momentarily), this goods-laden version was made exclusively available from Game in the UK, and was reportedly limited to between 500-1000 sets within each country.
Starting with the biggest extra included which gives this edition its name - the exclusive 12 inch zombie figurine (designed to mimic the stereotypical American tourist - hence the alias of the edition), which comes with two interchangable adornments. The traffic cone and Servbot head are both popular in-game weapons that can be shoved over the heads of enemies, and so to can they be outside the game. This will become a collectable amongst fans of the game/genre, but there is no way my partner, like many significant others, would allow it to be put on display. Like many things in coupled life, this accessory has been put away in the cupboard, unlike some other Special Edition figurines.
In addition to the 24 minute 'Making Of' documentary present in other special editions of the title, we find on the DVD alongside it the full length feature production of 'Dead Rising Sun'. Directed by the producer of the Dead Rising series, Keiji Inafune-San, and set in the same world as the games, this series was freely released episodically during the buildup to the game's release, but it is nice to have it in its complete form. The final physical bonus is a 'Tape It or Die Catalogue', showcasing several of the cominations of in-game weapons that may be combined to create evermore effective (read: nastier) weapons. A nice memento for once the game has been completed, utilising it would spoil a great deal of the in-game fun around discovering the combo cards through a variety of exploratory or accidental means.
The Outbreak Edition also comes with digital in-game goods as well, proving to be the only source of acquiring the preorder Sports Fan Skill Pack set made available more widely in other regions. This code will unlock four articles of clothing to make the player resemble a ardent sports fanatic, replete with colourful facepaint. Wearing just a single piece will allow the character to win more money through gambling, knock back copious amounts of alcohol without becoming nauseated, and deal additional damage with sports related weapons (baseball bat, american football, golf club, and the like. Wearing all four pieces, however, will unlock a new Charge move, allowing Chick to barrel through the zombie hordes, knocking them off their feet.
The Playstation 3 version also comes with a Dead Rising 2 XMB Dashboard Theme.
The Sports Fan Skills Pack will be released as the first piece of purchasable DLC in October 2010.
All in all, a nice content-filled edition, but with a little gruesome touch. It is a real shame that it did not warrant a piece of exclusive coverart, which would have made it much more recommendable. IF you can get permission to have the figure on display, a worthwhile purchase.
